The Fall Closet Reset: Simple Tips for a Seasonal Switch
The change from summer to fall is a great time to reset your closets. Between changing temperatures, growing kids, and bringing sweaters and jackets back into the mix, closets can quickly start to feel overcrowded.
A seasonal reset helps make room for what you’re actually wearing now while giving you a chance to see what you already have.
Don’t Store What You Don’t Wear
Before packing away summer clothes, take a quick look at what you actually wore this season. If there are pieces you continually skipped over, no longer fit, or simply don’t love anymore, consider donating or selling them instead of storing them for another year.
Do the same with your kids’ clothes. If you already know something won’t fit next summer, there’s no reason for it to take up storage space all winter.
Make the Seasonal Swap
You don’t have to switch your entire closet at once. Keep some T-shirts, shorts, and lighter layers accessible while bringing sweaters, pants, and jackets back into rotation.
As the temperatures cool down, move the remaining summer pieces into seasonal storage. Use clearly labeled bins so you know exactly what’s inside when it’s time to make the switch again.
Take Inventory Before You Shop
Before buying anything new for fall, see what you already have.
For your primary closet, grouping similar items together makes it easier to see what you may actually need.
For kids, check what still fits from last year before heading to the store. Have them try on questionable sizes and make a quick list of what needs to be replaced. You may realize they need new pants but already have plenty of sweatshirts and jackets.
Give Outgrown Clothes a Place to Go
One of our favorite systems for kids’ closets is a designated basket or bin for anything they outgrow during the season.
Instead of putting an item back in the closet, it immediately has somewhere to go. Once the bin fills up, decide what will be donated, sold, handed down, or stored.
A Little Reset Goes a Long Way
Switching your closets for fall doesn’t have to mean completely reorganizing them. Editing what you no longer need, taking inventory, and giving everything a designated place can make your closets easier to use and maintain throughout the season.
If your primary or kids’ closets need a bigger reset, Organized Interiors can help create a system that works for your space and your family.
